Tournament Rules

  1. Matches will be best two out of three sets, regular scoring.  A 12 point tie breaker to be played at six games all.
  2. Each player/team will bring one (1) can of new balls.  Loser takes used balls, winner takes unopened can.
  3. Free practice is allowed on courts only before match and only for 10 minutes.
  4. No one is to observe or coach by sitting or standing on the courts.
  5. All matches should be played at the KBTA courts, unless all players agree to play elsewhere.
  6. All matches should be played on clay, unless all players agree to play on a hard court.  Men's open matches will be played on clay.
  7. All finals will be played at KBTA on clay unless both opponents request a hard court and can be accommodated.
  8. Players must call their opponent within the first 2 days of each round; if a player cannot reach an opponent after 2 days, s/he should call and advise the draw coordinator.
  9. Ranked Junior players may play only in the Open events.  Adults must be fifteen (15) years and over.  Players must turn 15 by tournament deadline.
  10. A person may not enter a division which is less than their USTA (NTRP) rating.  It is the obligation of the entrant to honestly choose a rating that best describes their game from the NTRP rating categories provided.  If there are any questions, consult your local professional or call John Festa at (305) 361-3043.  If you played college tennis, you should not play in any category less than the USTA 4.5 level.
  11. Excluding open events, players may enter only one NTRP (non-age related) singles and one NTRP (non-age related) doubles event.  In the men's and women's doubles events, the level of the event will be that of the higher rated partner. There is a three (3) event limit for all participants.
  12. Doubles partners cannot be more than 1 NTRP level apart.
  13. In case of rain delay, play should continue as soon as possible.  Remember the sides and the score - play must resume exactly where it was stopped. 
  14. No substitutions will be allowed after the draw is finalized.
  15. If matches are not completed in a reasonable time, a default decision will be made the Default Committee.
  16. No beepers or cellular phones allowed on court.  For first offense, one point will be lost; for second offense, one game lost; and for third offense, match will be defaulted.
  17. Play between opponents must begin within 15 minutes or the missing party will be defaulted.
  18. Teaching pros need to be USTA NTRP certified in order to play in any event other than an OPEN event.
  19. To remain in a doubles category that you have won in the previous year, you must play with a different partner.
  20. In the 50 and over event, players must turn 50 by December 31st of the calendar year.
  21. In the 60 and over event, players must turn 60 by December 31st of the calendar year.
  22. The Committee reserves the right to a) default any player or players who exhibit un-sports-man-like conduct and may prohibit them from playing in future tournaments, and b) move or remove a player who is determined to be in the wrong division.
  23. USTA rules will be followed.

    Please consider your time schedule when entering more than two (2) events and notify the office at least three to five days in advance for scheduling all matches.  Remember, the courts will be busy.  All rounds must be played by the "play by" dates posted for each round on the draw.
